Exports drove cargo volumes up in maritime transport in the first half of the year

According to preliminary data from Statistics Finland, in the first half of the year, cargo volumes in ports have grown driven by exports.

The total volume of maritime transport in January–June 2025 was 45.3 million tonnes, which is 10% more than in the first half of last year. Exports increased by as much as 21% compared to a year ago, now totalling 23.2 million tonnes. Import traffic grew by just over one percent to 22.2 million tonnes.

In container traffic, there was a 14% increase compared to last year. In the first half of the year, passenger traffic also showed a slight growth of just over two percent.

“In port traffic at the beginning of the year, we have seen early signs of a turnaround in Finland’s economy. Exports have grown well, exceeding import traffic during the first half of the year. We naturally hope that this positive trend will continue in the latter part of the year,” says Piia Karjalainen, CEO of the Finnish Ports Association.
