Ports are vibrant workplaces operating around the clock, with a wide range of people, companies, and activities. In addition to stevedores’ heavy machinery, there are transport trucks, service and catering staff, security and authorities, as well as pedestrians, cyclists, cars, and tourists in passenger ports. During Safety Week, short safety sessions highlight the importance of visibility, safe routes, alertness, and consideration for others. Key instructions are repeated and reinforced.
No single measure or instruction can replace the fact that, in the end, everyone is responsible for their own safety. At the same time, a port – like any shared workplace – brings together many different operators and employees. Every task and activity affects not only one’s own colleagues but also the safety of everyone moving and working in the area. Managing this complexity requires commitment to building a strong safety culture together.
A port is a shared workplace, and occupational safety is a shared responsibility. This year’s theme, “The Port – A Shared Workplace”, serves as a reminder of that.
The Finnish Port Operators Association organises the Ports’ Occupational Safety Week in cooperation with the Finnish Ports Association and the trade unions AKT and PRO.
