The Biodiversity Roadmap for Finnish Ports aims to increase
awareness and expertise within the port sector on biodiversity issues, identify the most significant nature-related impacts and dependencies of port operations and businesses, and set concrete goals, milestones, and actions for member ports to enhance biodiversity.
This roadmap supports Finland’s broader commitments to halt biodiversity loss and promote sustainable maritime development in line with EU and global biodiversity goals.
This roadmap focuses primarily on port management operations and excludes maritime and land transport activities, concentrating on actions that ports can directly implement.
Finnish ports have identified their most harmful environmental impacts, such as dredging and the spread of
invasive species.
Port operations also depend on functioning ecosystems, making biodiversity loss a concern both for the environment and for business continuity.
While ports have long implemented climate actions and environmental monitoring, direct measures to improve biodiversity are still in their early stages.
The roadmap sets goals, milestones, and proposed actions for the member ports of the Finnish Port Association on their
journey towards nature-positivity. The goals are:
The Finnish Port Association will monitor progress through
surveys, and the results will be summarized in a report in
2030. The roadmap may be updated before 2030 as needed.
By implementing the roadmap, Finnish ports can enhance
biodiversity, build resilience for the future, and set an example
for sustainable, nature-positive practices beyond their own
sector.
