Port authorities are actively responding to the challenge of identifying and implementing environmental and sustainability solutions in their operations. Achieving carbon neutrality in their own operations is possible—Port of Helsinki Ltd was the first port authority to reach this goal in 2025. Achieving carbon neutrality for the entire port area is a more distant goal, as the majority of emissions come from vessel traffic.
Ports also contribute to the green transition by developing distribution infrastructure for new low-carbon and/or carbon-free fuels to meet the needs of shipping companies using the ports, supporting the maritime fuel transition through so-called green shipping corridors, implementing circular economy solutions, and protecting biodiversity in port construction and operations.
Sustainability topics have become a central focus of the working group alongside traditional themes, environmental permit obligations, and port-related land and water construction.
Members of the working group are professionals responsible for environmental permits and systems, port construction, and development in member ports. The group meets on average 3–4 times per year, both in-person and online.
